The Legacy of Women born around 1960

A new breed of women were born around 1960′s. They would become leaders in the 21st century in unforeseen numbers.

What were the prospects for them? What did they do and think of their lives when they were 10 years old and in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s?

What obstacles have they over come? How have they handled their life’s ups and downs, expectations and disappointments, difficulties and doubts, joys and achievements, sickness and celebrations?

How do they celebrate and honor their lives? What are their life lessons and legacy? What do they want to share with the younger generations? What about the next fifty?

To share these stories and tap into the wisdom of  women, the Women of Fifty project combines a variety of media from film to print and conferences. Women born around 1960, they have seen tremendous changes in the since the day of their birth all around the world. In 1960, job discrimination was legal in many countries, women needed their husbands’ permission to start a business, get a credit card, or rent an apartment as a separated spouse. Marital rape was legal.

This structure of law and custom seemed to have been in place forever, but within a few decades it was shattered completely by rising prosperity, the advent of home appliances and the pill, the influx of women in the workplace in the 1950s and 60s and the civil rights and anti-war movements. It’s no wonder that young women today think that life for women pre-1970 sounds like science fiction.

What did the women growing up during this tumultuous time have to overcome? As some have made their way into the new era of female equality, they have had to learn handle their expectations, disappointments, difficulties and doubts. They have also relished their achievements and reveled in their joys.
